Last night (Sunday 13th May 2012) Katie Smith (pictured above middle) was presented with a Community Champions Award for "Achieving Against The Odds". Katie who suffered a debilitating illness after the birth of her son. During the two years that she was incapacitated Katie worked on an idea for the "Science Garden" that is now in place at Alvaston Park. It took a further five years for it to be completed.
The award was presented by Jo Hughes (pictured above left) who is the branch manager of the Alvaston branch of the Derbyshire Building Society. Pictured also is Dan, Katie's husband.
