Barley Straw is put into the lake

Over the years there have been complaints that the lake looked unsightly during the summer months because of algae on the surface. On 16th March 2012, the Derby City Council Parks Department took steps to reduce this by putting barley straw into the water. Barley straw is thought to be an algaecide, and after being stuffed into mesh sausages it was sunk into the lake.
